Len Nichols on FOX Business | 'With 45 Million Lacking Coverage, Pressure Still On Health System'

August 28, 2008

The portion of people covered by job-based and other private insurance declined and likely will continue to do so, placing more pressure on public programs, said Len Nichols, a health economist and director of the health-policy program for the New America Foundation, a nonprofit, nonpartisan research group in Washington.

Michael Dannenberg in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer | 'Bergeson Offers Fix for 'No Child Left Behind''

August 28, 2008

With the presidential election still more than two months away, experts say it's too soon to tell how the law might be reformed.

But there's likely to be a continued march toward national academic standards, and one national test, said Michael Dannenberg, an education expert with the New America Foundation, a centrist nonprofit public policy institute. LINK

American Strategy Program DNC Event on Al Jazeera | ' Democrats Debate the Middle East'

August 28, 2008

On Wednesday the New America Foundation, a public policy think tank, sponsored a forum dedicated to answering one question: How can the next president make the Middle East irrelevant?

Unsurprisingly, the consensus amongst those attending was that should the Democrats win the White House in November a major overhaul in policy and strategy is needed.

Steve Clemons in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel | 'Democrats Shore Up National Security Stance'

August 28, 2008

On a night when the convention’s stated theme was “securing America’s future,” speakers portrayed McCain as an unreconstructed hawk and Bush enabler, an outdated thinker who supported a war that distracted America from fighting al-Qaida in Afghanistan, empowered a hostile Iran and left the United States weaker instead of safer...

Jeffrey Lewis in New Scientist | 'Iraq Bans Nuclear Tests'

August 28, 2008
Iraq's move has been welcomed by disarmament experts, though some question its significance. It's good but "relatively meaningless" given the US refusal to ratify, says Jeffrey Lewis from New America Foundation, a think tank based in Washington DC. "This is probably the only non-proliferation benefit the US got out of the Iraq invasion." LINK

Steve Clemons in the Guardian | 'Biden to Recast Foreign Policy from Center Stage'

August 27, 2008
Steve Clemons, a director the Washington-based New America Foundation and among the first to tip Biden for the vice-presidential slot, is among those who argue that Biden's exercise of power in the White House would be similar to that of Cheney's. "The office of vice-president has changed forever," he said. "The office has explicit legal powers now. Maybe some will be rolled back but they can't be rolled back easily." LINK

“In the 21st century, the threats we face are at least as dangerous and in some ways more complex than those we’ve confronted in the past,” said Susan Rice, Obama’s top foreign policy adviser, in a speech at the New America Foundation on Aug. 15, “By definition they require cooperative solutions . . . while working with our allies and coming together in effective partnerships...”

Len Nichols in BNA News | 'Census Bureau Says Fewer Lack Coverage; Decrease Reflects Shift to Public Insurance'

August 27, 2008

The number of uninsured Americans decreased by 1.3 million from 2006 to 2007, a change largely attributable to an increase in government-sponsored coverage, the U.S. Census Bureau reported Aug. 26.

The Census Bureau's annual report on income, poverty, and health insurance found that the number of uninsured people decreased from 47 million in 2006 to 45.7 million in 2007, or 15.8 percent to 15.3 percent of Americans.

...[T]he economic slowdown means that more people who now are middle class could find themselves uninsured. It also means that more people are worried that they could lose jobs and their health insurance.

“It is a deep and growing -- and you could say even gnawing -- fear among the middle class,” said Len Nichols, director of the Health Policy Program at the New America Foundation, a public policy institute. LINK

Lisa Margonelli on New Hampshire Public Radio | Word of Mouth: 'Next Green Thing - Termite Guts'

August 26, 2008

In the world of social insects, the lowly termite gets no respect. Sure, ants and bees have their champions and are lauded for their social cohesion and industriousness. Termites, on the other hand, are the bane of homeowners everywhere. They eat up about $11 billion in U.S. property each year. Some species also have the rather unsocial habit of snapping the heads off of invading ants.

American Strategy Program Event with James Dobbins in the Washington Times | 'Russia's Withdrawal'

August 26, 2008
The debate over who to blame for this war in Central Asia becomes less important if Russia has leverage over the NATO operation in Afghanistan. Russia is waiting to see how the Western alliance reacts to its withdrawal from Georgia before deciding what to do next. "It would depend on whether the Russians simply stop being positive, which probably wouldn't have much of an effect," James Dobbins, the former special envoy for Afghanistan, said last week at a New America Foundation event.

Steve Clemons on Democracy Now | 'A Debate on Sen. Joe Biden’s Foreign Policy Record'

August 25, 2008

Much of the focus of Sen. Obama’s selection of Biden to be his running mate has centered on his foreign policy experience. Biden serves as the chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee. In 2002, he helped push through a Senate resolution authorizing the invasion of Iraq. He has since become a persistent critic of President Bush’s policies in Iraq and the so-called troop surge.

Peter Bergen in the Washington Post | 'They Can Only Go So Far'

August 24, 2008
Democracy's only real competitor in the realm of ideas today is radical Islamism. Indeed, one of the world's most dangerous nation-states today is Iran, run by extremist Shiite mullahs. But as Peter Bergen pointed out in these pages last week, Sunni radicalism has been remarkably ineffective in actually taking control of a nation-state, due to its propensity to devour its own potential supporters.

Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget Report in the Washington Times | 'A Deficit No Matter Who Wins?'

August 22, 2008

In the first comprehensive analysis that reviews the budget policies of Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain from both the spending and taxing sides of the ledger, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB) estimated that Mr. Obama's policies would transform the current base-line budget surplus of $70 billion for 2013 into a budget deficit of $317 billion.
